Does acupuncture hurt?
This is usually the first question people ask, and the answer is no. Acupuncture is actually quite painless. Most people have a negative association with needles based on their experience with giving blood or getting shots. Those procedures require hollow hypodermic needles, which are usually 100 times larger than acupuncture needles. In fact as many as 40 acupuncture needles can fit into the head of one hypodermic needle!
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture encourages the body’s innate capability to heal itself. Acupuncture has an affect on circulation, muscle tone, nerve signals, and energy flow in the meridians. Meridians are pathways of connection that travel every surface of the body. Running superficial to deep and head to toe, they affect everything from muscles to internal organs and emotions. Often referred to as "energy channels," meridians are a vast and complex network of connected areas and functions within the body. Manipulating the meridians with acupuncture and other therapies, regulates the flow and distribution of vital nutrients, blood and energy (qi), and has the potential to influence all physiological processes within the body. Clinical trials have found acupuncture to be very effective at alleviating pain and reducing inflammation, making acupuncture a great option for treating both chronic and acute injuries.
How many treatments will i need?
It varies with each individual and depends on factors such as: the type of condition you have, how long you’ve had the condition, and how proactive you are in following recommendations between treatments. When treating pain there is often relief after the very first treatment, which may last for a few days and then gradually return. For this reason, it is recommended to get treatments once or twice a week until there is a longer period of relief between treatments. As your condition improves you can come less frequently, eventually coming in only as needed, for maintenance or during acute flare-ups. With internal conditions such as digestive issues, infertility, or irregular menses, a period of 3 months of weekly treatments is recommended to create significant and lasting changes.
What if I'm scared of needles?
We offer many other forms of treatment that don’t require the use of needles: massage, moxa, guasha, cupping, yoga and health consultations. Call (808) 283-4056 for a brief consultation to decided which healing modality is best suited for your needs. I also invite you to try acupuncture "one needle at a time." If it doesn't feel right for you we can stop and switch to a different modality. However, people are usually pleasantly surprised to find that acupuncture is painless, and often don't even feel the needle go in.
What kind of needles do you use?
We use only high quality stainless steel needles, which are sterile, disposable, and very thin. Each needle is used only once and then safely disposed.
What is Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is both a science and philosophy of health and healing that developed over 2,000 years ago through the observation of nature. Living closer to nature and being more exposed to the elements of weather, the ancient sages and healers were very aware of our intimate connection with the planet and the environment. By living, breathing, and eating from our environment, we are literally made from the material of our environment. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the human body is viewed as a miniature version or "microcosm" of the planet we live on. The same fundamental substances or elements in nature also exist in the human body: air, water, fire, earth and ether. Like the planet, our bodies are over 75% water. We have an internal fire or heat in the form of metabolism and other cellular processes. As in nature, in the human body there is a fine balance that must be maintained between the elements. If there is too much heat or sunlight plants begin to shrivel and die. If a river stops flowing the stagnant water begins to harbor disease. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses the basic laws of nature as they relate to the human body, and applies therapies such as acupuncture and herbal medicine to help restore the fundamental flow and balance of the energy and substances, or elements, within the body.
